Salesforce links CRM data directly into ChatGPT

Salesforce has launched an Agentforce Sales app for ChatGPT that links OpenAI's models directly with live customer relationship management data from Salesforce.

The integration allows sales staff to access account information, pipeline data and customer history from within the ChatGPT interface. Users can query live Salesforce records, update fields and trigger sales workflows using natural language.

Salesforce first introduced Agentforce Sales as part of a push into autonomous sales agents. The ChatGPT app extends that approach beyond the Salesforce platform into a third-party environment that many sales teams already use for research and drafting.

Context inside ChatGPT

The Agentforce Sales app connects ChatGPT conversations with a company's Salesforce instance. It makes account details, lead status, opportunity records and other CRM data available as context for ChatGPT prompts, subject to existing user permissions.

Sales users can ask the app for lists of new or uncontacted leads and receive live, filterable results drawn from Salesforce. This removes the need to copy data between systems and reduces manual preparation of prompts with profile and account information.

The app also supports conversational updates of CRM records. A user can instruct the system to change the status of an opportunity, assign leads to a specific engagement flow or capture notes from a recent call. Those actions write back to Salesforce without requiring the user to navigate the CRM interface.

Combining data sources

Salesforce positions the ChatGPT integration as a way to link internal CRM data with external information that OpenAI's models can access. The app factors in lead scores, pipeline health and market or news signals when ranking which prospects a seller should prioritise at a given moment.

This approach aims to give sales representatives a consolidated view of customer potential that reflects both internal activity and broader conditions. The system can generate draft account plans, with sections on priorities, key performance indicators, risks and growth opportunities, and then store those plans back inside Salesforce.

Sales teams can also delegate routine outreach tasks through natural language commands in ChatGPT. The app can hand lower-priority leads to automated engagement flows, leaving human sellers to work on larger or more complex deals.

Customer reaction

Asymbl, a customer of Salesforce, has started to use the new app with its sales organisation.

"Using ChatGPT without Salesforce was frustrating because the conversation stopped short," said Brandon Metcalf, CEO and Founder, Asymbl. "We could talk about opportunities, but we couldn't move them forward. With the Agentforce Sales app in ChatGPT, our reps can prioritise deals, plan accounts, and update Salesforce directly from the conversation. It will change how our sales team works and boost productivity."

The Agentforce Sales app aims to reduce the need for users to switch between multiple browser tabs and applications during a sales cycle. It brings CRM workflows into the same interface where many users already draft emails, research prospects and prepare meeting notes.

Security and governance

Salesforce routes data exchanged between ChatGPT and Salesforce through what it calls the Agentforce Trust Layer. This acts as a controlled channel for information flowing in both directions between the CRM system and the ChatGPT app.

The company states that customer data processed through the Agentforce Sales app remains governed by existing Salesforce security standards. ChatGPT accesses only the data that a user is already permitted to view in Salesforce and uses that as context for responses.

The Trust Layer also checks AI-generated recommendations before they reach the user. The goal is that suggestions align with company policies and that proprietary business data does not leave approved boundaries.

Meeting sellers in ChatGPT

Salesforce has framed the launch as part of a broader effort to embed Agentforce across multiple work environments, including Salesforce, Slack and now ChatGPT. The company wants sales functions and AI assistance to appear inside tools that sales teams already use each day.

The Agentforce Sales app for ChatGPT is now in open beta. It is available for customers on the Agentforce for Sales Add-on and Agentforce 1 Edition, and can be installed from the ChatGPT app directory.

Kris Billmaier, GM and EVP of Agentforce Sales at Salesforce, said the company expects sellers to carry out more of their daily pipeline work inside ChatGPT as a result of the integration. "With the Agentforce Sales app in ChatGPT, we're bringing Salesforce into the tools sellers already use," said Billmaier. "Now conversations with the Agentforce Sales app in ChatGPT understand your customers, move deals forward, and get real sales work done."
