StarHub launches 5G+ to boost indoor mobile coverage

StarHub has launched 5G+ for customers on its 5G mobile plans, using 700MHz spectrum to extend coverage indoors and underground.

Existing users on 5G mobile plans will receive the service automatically, while new customers will get it from the start of their contracts. 5G+ is available across all StarHub 5G mobile plans.

The upgrade is aimed at areas where mobile coverage often weakens, including office buildings, shopping centres, basements and car parks. StarHub said the 700MHz spectrum allows signals to travel deeper into buildings and other hard-to-reach locations.

The operator said customers could see speeds up to four times faster indoors and underground than on its existing service. It tied the launch to common mobile uses such as streaming, gaming, browsing and video calling.

Consumer offer

Alongside the launch, StarHub introduced a discount on selected mobile plans. New sign-ups and users switching their number to StarHub on Unlimited+ Max and Platinum plans will receive 50% off for six months.

The launch comes as competition in Singapore's mobile market remains focused on network quality and pricing. Automatic access for existing 5G plan users also removes the need to opt into a separate tier.

Enterprise focus

StarHub also highlighted an enterprise angle to the network update, saying the wider indoor reach and more dependable service could support critical teams and operations that rely on mobile connectivity.

It added that Enterprise Priority Services allow organisations to prioritise network access for key users and workflows during periods of heavy demand. The approach is intended to support field operations and collaboration tools when networks come under strain.

The launch adds to a broader push by telecoms operators to improve 5G performance beyond headline outdoor coverage. In dense urban environments, indoor reception and service quality in underground spaces can have a greater effect on day-to-day user experience than peak speed claims alone.

Making the service available across every 5G mobile plan suggests a strategy centred on network differentiation rather than reserving the upgrade for premium users. The offer also reflects a market in which operators are trying to show practical improvements in places where customers most often notice service gaps.

StarHub said 5G+ requires a compatible device and remains subject to network coverage and other factors that can affect speeds, including location, network conditions and concurrent usage. The 5G+ network indicator on devices will also depend on operating system updates from manufacturers.

The company described the launch as part of its ongoing network investment, aimed at providing a more consistent mobile experience in locations where connectivity is frequently tested.
