Gkash has become a direct participant in Payments Network Malaysia, giving the Malaysian payments provider a direct connection to key national payment rails.

The arrangement covers Gkash's DuitNow QR, MyDebit and FPX services, which are widely used for in-store and online transactions in Malaysia. The change strengthens the infrastructure behind those services by reducing reliance on an intermediary payment participant for supported transaction flows.

Transactions on those rails can now move through a simpler structure between merchants, Gkash and PayNet, the country's national payments network. The direct-participant model also gives Gkash greater control over integration and transaction operations.

The development comes as merchants face growing demand to accept payments across both physical and digital channels. Gkash operates as a payment solutions provider and merchant acquirer, offering online and in-store services to businesses in Malaysia.

Payment rails

DuitNow QR enables interoperable QR payments through participating banks and e-wallets. MyDebit is used for debit card payments at physical acceptance points, while FPX is an online banking payment service commonly used for eCommerce and other digital purchases.

Together, the three systems cover several common consumer payment journeys, from scanning a QR code at a shop counter to paying online by bank transfer or using a debit card at a terminal. By connecting directly to the network behind those systems, Gkash is tightening its role in the transaction flows used by its merchant customers.

For merchants, the shift is less a customer-facing change than a back-end change to the route transactions take through the payments system. A more direct connection can support simpler payment flows, better service reliability and a stronger base as transaction volumes rise.

Merchant focus

Gkash's broader product set includes payment gateway services, payment terminals, SoftPOS and other digital payment tools. These products are aimed at businesses that want to accept payments across different sales environments, including eCommerce and physical stores.

By bringing DuitNow QR, MyDebit and FPX into the same operating environment, Gkash is aligning some of Malaysia's main payment methods under one provider relationship for merchants. That could matter for businesses seeking fewer integration layers as they manage card, QR and online banking acceptance together.

PayNet runs shared payment infrastructure for Malaysia's financial markets and supports services including DuitNow, MyDebit and FPX. Its role in the country's payments system makes direct participation a notable operational step for payment firms seeking a closer link to domestic transaction rails.

An intermediary participant adds another layer between a merchant acquirer and the national network. Removing that layer for supported services changes how Gkash connects to the system and gives the company more direct oversight of the technical and operational links involved in processing transactions.

Operational control

The announcement also marks a broader stage in Gkash's development as a domestic payment provider. The change reinforces its position as a locally connected payments firm serving the day-to-day needs of businesses.

Malaysia's payments market has seen strong adoption of QR payments, cards and account-based online transfers, making interoperability and network access important considerations for providers serving merchants across channels. In that context, direct network participation can shape how payment firms manage resilience, system changes and service delivery.

Gkash said direct participation strengthens the foundation on which it delivers payment services to merchants and supports a more unified payment experience across QR, card and online banking acceptance.
