GoTo Financial completes Jakarta cloud move with Alibaba Cloud
GoTo and Alibaba Cloud have completed the migration of GoTo Financial's infrastructure to Alibaba Cloud's data centres in Jakarta, Indonesia.
This development marks a significant achievement in the partnership between GoTo, Indonesia's largest digital ecosystem, and Alibaba Cloud, the cloud services provider under Alibaba Group. The migration is considered one of the most complex and large-scale projects of its kind in Indonesia and is seen as supporting the country's data sovereignty by ensuring that data remains within national borders.
GoTo Financial, which is responsible for the popular payment solution GoPay, supports over 20 million monthly transacting users. The migration to Alibaba Cloud's infrastructure is anticipated to streamline operations, reduce costs, and improve service efficiency for GoPay's users.
Patrick Walujo, GoTo Group CEO, said: "By completing this migration with Alibaba Cloud, we've strengthened the core infrastructure that underpins GoTo Financial's services. The transition also reinforces our commitment to Indonesia's data sovereignty, with all data being held within Indonesia. As a result of this, our Company is now well positioned for the future as we continue to support millions of Indonesians with trusted, homegrown financial solutions."
Sean Yuan, Regional General Manager, South Pacific & Japan, Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, commented: "This successful migration shows how Alibaba Cloud's technologies can support large-scale digital transformation. We're proud to work with GoTo in shaping Indonesia's digital future and look forward to deepening our partnership."
The project required moving GoTo Financial's core applications to Alibaba Cloud. With high system stability and the capacity to support large-scale concurrent transactions essential for more than 20 million monthly transacting users, the migration presented significant technical demands. To ensure continuity and a seamless user experience, teams from Alibaba Cloud and GoTo collaborated to develop a full-stack technical solution.
The migration was supported by a comprehensive suite of Alibaba Cloud products. Proprietary tools such as Landing Zone and Terraform were utilised to achieve 100% Infrastructure as Code (IaC) deployment, providing a stable base for the thousands of microservices in operation. The migration process used a "dual-core" architecture that enabled the gradual rerouting of traffic to Alibaba Cloud, which was completed without user disruption.
Alibaba Cloud's three data centres in Indonesia, along with services across computing, container, database, networking, and security, played a role in building an automated, secure, and reliable infrastructure for GoTo Financial. This setup was designed to provide cost efficiencies while meeting the high standards required for financial services and digital payment solutions.
Beyond the infrastructure migration, the partnership between Alibaba Cloud and GoTo also encompasses talent development and technology innovation. In May 2025, a collaboration between Alibaba Cloud, GoTo, and Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) resulted in the Alibaba Cloud GenAI Hackathon, aimed at accelerating the development of local digital talent and contributing to economic growth.
The partnership, established in September 2024, has seen Alibaba Cloud's technologies play an increasingly significant role in bolstering GoTo's digital ecosystem. Both companies have indicated intentions to expand their collaboration through new commercial initiatives intended to empower Indonesian businesses and support the country's digital economy.
