WP Engine has formed a strategic partnership with Commerce to launch WP Engine Commerce Connect for BigCommerce, aimed at high-growth mid-market brands running websites on WordPress.

The launch targets companies that have outgrown their current eCommerce setups but want to avoid rebuilding their websites from scratch. It connects BigCommerce with WP Engine's WordPress offering, letting brands upgrade the commerce layer while keeping their existing content, design and site structure.

Migration path

The service is aimed at businesses with expanding product ranges, rising traffic and more complex online sales operations. It is also designed for agencies managing client websites that need a commerce upgrade without a full redesign or migration.

According to the companies, merchants can keep WordPress themes and front-end experiences intact when moving to BigCommerce. Sites can also stay live during upgrades, while URL structures and site architecture remain in place, helping protect search rankings and traffic performance.

The partnership reflects a broader shift in online retail as brands look to separate content management from transaction systems instead of relying on a single platform for both. That approach has gained traction among businesses that have made long-term investments in content, search performance and brand presentation on WordPress, but need a different system to support a larger eCommerce operation.

WP Engine is best known for WordPress hosting and related tools. Commerce is the parent company of BigCommerce, Feedonomics and Makeswift. By combining WP Engine's WordPress base with BigCommerce's eCommerce software, the companies are trying to solve a common migration problem for growing merchants.

One of the main issues for retailers moving upmarket is the risk of replacing a website that already generates traffic and sales. A full rebuild can affect site availability, alter the customer journey and damage search visibility if page structures and URLs change. It can also raise costs for brands and agencies by extending project timelines and increasing implementation work.

That makes a staged approach more appealing for companies that want to improve commerce functions without dismantling the web experience they already use. In practical terms, the offering is positioned as a way to replace or strengthen the transactions layer while leaving the content layer largely untouched.

Growth focus

Heather Brunner, Chairwoman and Chief Executive Officer, WP Engine, said the partnership is intended to remove that trade-off for growing retailers.

"Growing eCommerce brands shouldn't have to choose between the WordPress experience they've invested in and the commerce capabilities they need to scale," said Heather Brunner, Chairwoman and Chief Executive Officer, WP Engine.

"Our partnership with BigCommerce gives brands the flexibility to scale confidently, adapt as their business evolves, and build for what's next," added Brunner.

The companies also framed the tie-up around changes in product discovery and online buying behaviour, saying brands increasingly need to manage product information consistently across multiple digital touchpoints as search and shopping experiences evolve.

Travis Hess, Chief Executive Officer, Commerce, linked the move to those broader shifts in the market.

"Commerce is becoming more complex as brands compete across more channels, more customer touchpoints, and now AI-powered buying experiences," said Travis Hess, Chief Executive Officer, Commerce.

"Our partnership with WP Engine gives brands and agencies an open, flexible foundation that brings content and commerce together to help them create richer customer experiences, improve discoverability, and adapt faster as the way people shop continues to evolve," added Hess.

Agency appeal

For agencies, the product is positioned as a lower-risk migration path for clients whose sites have become difficult to scale commercially. Rather than rebuilding a WordPress site from the ground up, agencies can retain the existing visual layer and implement a new eCommerce backend, reducing the likelihood of disruption during the transition.

That could appeal particularly to mid-market brands, where eCommerce teams often face pressure to improve conversion and operational efficiency without losing the traffic, content authority and brand consistency already built into their websites. In those cases, maintaining site continuity can be as commercially important as adding new sales functionality.

WP Engine said it serves more than 5 million sites. Commerce counts brands including Coldwater Creek, Cole Haan, Dell, Harvey Nichols, King Arthur Baking Co., Mizuno, Pacsun, Perry Ellis, Skechers, SportsShoes and Uplift Desk among users of its broader commerce products.
