Markko Labs opens applications for next startup cohort

Yesterday

Markko Labs, the marketplace incubator programme established by the e-commerce platform Markko, is inviting applications for its second cohort of non-technical marketplace founders.

The programme, launched last year, has already helped debut two new marketplaces – DesignSnitch and WorkVans. This initiative is designed to support entrepreneurs in transforming their ideas into operational marketplaces without encountering the typical technical or financial barriers. Markko Labs is positioning itself as an influential entity within the online business incubation sphere.

The programme addresses a market gap where many aspiring entrepreneurs struggle with resource and skill deficiencies to realise their marketplace concepts. By providing expert support, cost reductions, and a platform tailored for purpose, Markko Labs aims to act as a springboard for founders eager to enter the e-commerce domain.

"DesignSnitch and WorkVans have shown what's possible when you remove the traditional barriers to launching a marketplace," stated James Ansell, Chief Executive Officer of Markko. "This programme isn't just about creating platforms; it's about empowering people with bold ideas to reshape the future of online commerce."

The programme prides itself on offering numerous advantages to expedite the launch and growth of marketplaces. Among the benefits are reduced costs, as founders can utilise Markko's infrastructure, minimising the heavy initial investment often required. Participants receive continuous feedback and advice from industry veterans, and Markko's team manages technical complexities, enabling founders to concentrate on business development.

Additionally, the programme introduces startups to investors who specialise in marketplaces, provides a flexible platform that supports rapid iterations based on market feedback, and grants access to Markko Academy's resources. Participants can learn about marketplace dynamics and e-commerce strategies through the academy.

The success of the inaugural cohort demonstrates the programme's capabilities. DesignSnitch creates a unique venue for designers to sell curated works, whereas WorkVans caters to businesses with specific vehicle rental needs.

Applicants for Markko Labs are required to invest a minimum of GBP £5,000 in initial costs, plus further investment for marketing. Despite representing a substantial commitment, this is significantly lower than the costs involved in creating a marketplace independently.

The application process encourages aspiring founders to submit their applications, and Markko is also organising webinars and virtual sessions to inform prospective participants about the programme and facilitate direct interaction with the team.

Markko Labs illustrates a notable effort within the e-commerce sector to lower entry barriers for entrepreneurs. With a continuous surge in demand for online marketplaces, especially within niche and specialised fields, the programme is anticipated to attract a wide array of applicants.

As the second cohort prepares to commence, the Markko team is optimistic about building upon the initial success and continuing to empower entrepreneurs to introduce innovative ideas to the market.
